HERE WE GO AGAIN

It’s been two months of “watch and wait” with my cancer. Went by quick and not so quick at the same time.

Two months of my life completely changed in how I think about EVERYTHING.

I have been trying to be less stressed, more rest, have more joy in my day-to-day, reconnect with so many friends, and still hanging with my family a bunch.

Trying to laugh often, more than cry.

I have been doing ok I think. Pretty optimistic that I can make this season filled with joy even when it’s not very fun.

Last week got tougher, I got crankier. I think I was feeling anxious leading up to today’s new scans.

But I am trying to feel calm for the scan at the same time... maybe that will help the results. 😉

Today is a blood test and PET Scan. I’ll show more pics in my stories later @jennsjoy.run .

I know I have a lot of wonderful people praying for me, but I will take all I can get!

Anyway, I don't design a ton of weddings in a single year, but here in 2021 I have already collaborated with my favorite letterpress printer @hazelandviolet on at least 3 this past month!⁠

At the end of this year marks my 10-year anniversary, and I am excited to plan something special for me and the hubby! ⁠

Weddings are so special, and I try to make every bride & groom feel comfortable knowing they can get their custom invitation made to exactly what they dreamed (if not better). ⁠

For those new to me and my journey, you might not know that I run my own business @makejoystudio , a graphic design company of just me for the past 6 years.

My new #cancer diagnosis has definitely thrown a wrench into the cogs of this operation, but even with my pending scans for an update from my doctor, I have been able to mentally get back to work under this “new normal” and figuring out how my business functions with potentially a lot of unknowns FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.

It’s not that I had a crystal ball 🔮 before this, but now more than ever, I have to build my business to have flexibility if I am sick, or need time off for my health.

I still need to pay the bills, and enjoy feeling “normal” with a daily grind regardless of cancer.

I have definitely reworked my business already to ensure my health actions are a priority: getting a workout in, eating healthy meals, time for meditation and rest.

My biggest problem all my life has been stress, and I know my priority needs to reduce stress as much as possible going forward. So I have new goals focused on that.

I have a lot more ideas for automating a lot of the little tasks that this solopreneuer does (with help from her very part-time assistant).

This week felt like the wheels were moving for a lot of different elements of this “new way” of doing my design business and I am super grateful for that.

I feel excited and not overwhelmed. A “calm hustle” approach to my business, like my coach @iamemilysullivan would say.

So excited to get these cards out into the mail today. I am participating in a Christmas Card Exchange and needed to send out 9 cards to encourage some amazing women.

I had all the materials in my home to make these, and this tells me two things:
1. It’s time to declutter. But more than that...
2. It means I have the tools already to enjoy making things by hand (like I did a lot in grad school) and I should do this more often.

So! If you have read this far and ever want to receive some special mail from me at some point in my future life. DM your physical mailing address.

I have loved mail since I was little and use to exchange mail with my grandma. I lived in CA and she was here in AZ at the time, and I know that’s another reason why I fell in love with AZ and stay today. 🌵

Remembering this day and how far we have come! Missing the father of the bride so much, but super grateful for my husband, our families and our friends!

Happy Halloween 🎃

I picked my costume this year just because it was pretty (and inexpensive), but then as I thought about it more over the past week I realized something more:

2020 has been the worst, but also a year where I am really starting to emerge out of a sad space and into something I believe is truly exciting.

Just like a butterfly 🦋!

My costume was fun and pretty, but it’s also a metaphor for my life in 2020. I am so grateful for this year and the people who surround me (even virtually and from long distances). I hope everyone else can find some good in this year like I am. It’s not over yet!
